“Seth material” search engine (Jane Roberts)

Since this book was not devoted exclusively to projections, I did not include those embarked upon from waking or trance states, though some of these provided excellent “evidence.” In them, however, my own consciousness was still physically oriented since I “went out” to check the reliability of my perceptions against physical reality.

My students provided me with many projection reports from the dream state. I relied largely on my own simply because I was intimately familiar with the subjective feelings involved in each case and did not want to depend upon reports that were necessarily secondhand.

In extracting material on dreams from our many sessions, I have, to some extent, ripped it out of its living context. Each session, for example, includes Rob’s notes which provide a constant physical framework and reference to our daily activities. Seth’s monologues are broken up by humorous references or snatches of conversation with Rob. Seth’s own book, Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul, will be presented using the session format, however, so that the entire flavor of the sessions can be appreciated.

[...] This state of dreaming provides an inner network of communication, that in its way far surpasses your technological communications. [...]

[...] From your standpoint this represents a deep state of unconscious creativity — at the cellular levels particularly — by which all cellular life communicates and forms a vital biological network that provides the very basis for any “higher” experience at all.

[...] Your world provides a theater in which certain events can or cannot occur. [...]

[...] Now, it is she who provides strongly a supportive atmosphere in which you work. It is she who provides the warm spontaneity that allows you to develop. [...] She provides steps of energy that allow you to move upwards, she provides strength when you need it. [...]

[...] —However, I will say here that large portions of her energy are diverted to provide supportive help physically for all members of the family. [...]

Such bonding provides a sense of safety and focus. The belief system may in fact be negatively attuned while still providing that overall value. [...] Some cultures provide symbols, or symbolic steps within the system itself, that allow for a steady “progression,” in which a young person’s curiosity and accelerated adolescent rebellion is subtly directed from within the society itself. [...]

(Long pause.) The original ideas connected with the Sinful Self’s beliefs were at one time, for example, not as obviously unfortunate, since the system itself also provided for salvation, methods of appeasement and so forth—all of which were thoroughly accepted through many centuries. [...]

[...] This provides the necessary sense of safety and the sense of definition in which the child can safely use its explorative abilities. [...]

[...] If the granaries are gone, and if they provide no nourishment, then she looks to work like ours instead to provide a kind of idealized picture of human psychology. [...]

(8:32; eventually a one-minute pause.) The symptoms have served to “allow you” a certain privacy, A certain detachment from the world, while at the same time providing a way of relating to others, of sharing life’s misfortunes so that it might not be said, for example, that as artists or people you lived in an ivory tower, untouched by life’s usual dilemmas. [...]

[...] There will also be days when it is quite obvious that the framework provides only for your own inconvenience and discomfort—but the fact that it is a framework, created and maintained, is important. [...]

[...] They still provide however in one way or another a framework in which the personality feels itself free to pursue its goals. The built-in impetuses however provide clue points. When the new sensed reality is strong enough to provide not only greater comprehensions but also to construct a new framework, then the old framework is seen as limiting, and discarded.

[...] They do not simply provide you with a basis for your religions, sciences, and civilizations. [...]

[...] (Long pause.) They provide the power that allows you to form a belief system to begin with.

[...] This viewpoint will, I hope, provide another framework through which you can understand and study physical reality, your part in it, and sense the immense creative complexity that unites each individual with the source of consciousness itself.

I will interrupt whenever I can be of benefit — and I will also provide sometimes short but pithy session material (with humor) that can be used sometimes as subject matter for free association. You can begin of course by free associating with any appropriate subject — his mother, his father, your relationship, your individual or joint sexual feelings, his ideas about his psychic material, his writing, or whatever — and I will also provide guidelines.

[...] Again, we want, say, the release of painful thoughts or emotions somehow balanced by the steps I gave today, so that they provide a kind of supporting framework.

[...] It would provide variety and a sense of accomplishment aside from any other more personal material Seth may give. [...]

[...] This provides you with areas of choice, gives you manipulability, and allows for the myriad of probable activities “possible.” [...] If only one were provided you would have no choice. [...]

[...] Such idealizations provide their own impetus; that is, they will grow toward their own greatest fulfillment.

[...] The structure of probabilities provides on the one hand a system of barriers, in which practical growth is not chosen or significant; and on the other hand it insures a safe, creative, rich environment — a reality — in which the idealization can choose from an almost infinite variety of possible actions those best suited to its own fulfillment.

[...] Does the question provide its own answer, or is there another who will provide the answer, or does the prophet question in vain? [...]

You ask yourself the same questions as you paint the painting, and the directed unity and focus will provide exhilaration and strength to it. And the need, so strongly implied, will also provide the answer and the means.

The emotion always provides the movement.

[...] Your writing and painting provide “services” of a different order. [...]

(Pause.) Art provides its own services to the individual, whether or not it appears to be utilitarian. [...]

[...] He depends upon creativity, for example, as you do, to provide a more or less steady source of enjoyment, excitement, personal accomplishment—not to mention livelihood —and as per last evening’s session, creativity operates in ways that may appear uncertain. [...]

[...] The dreams provide a steady give-and-take between conscious and so-called unconscious activity. [...]

[...] the dreams also provide additional assurance, and while dreaming body states are altered—something physicians of course do not recognize. [...]

Now: this basic mental system provides the infant’s natural mental environment, and nurtures it so that the infant is anything but strictly programmed mentally. It is provided with endless variations of probable reality systems, to which it will be able to mentally relate, and into whose framework it will be able to pour its curiosity.

(I ended up this evening wondering why nature would provide within its limitless possibilities that of such nasty ideas or creations—which, I told Jane, only meant that we had the power or ability to create such ungainly hassles. [...]

[...] Any of the pills are all right, taken now and then—but the stronger ones provide overstimulations when taken often, and these caused Ruburt’s difficulties. [...]

There is a compassion, a jovial yet understanding one, that I can feel for such activities that is more difficult for you to experience, but in many cases the drama—the gods or devils who seem (underlined) to speak through the board, the sense of importance felt by the participators, the heightened emotional activity—all of these provide often, rich elements of experience otherwise lacking from a mundane daily existence.

A framework is also then self-provided in which deeper questions of personality, life and being are worked out at the specific level of the individual’s experience. [...]

(All intently:) As your life is provided for you, so to speak, by these spontaneous processes, the life of the universe is provided in the same fashion. [...]

In the truest regard, your life is provided for you by these spontaneous processes. [...]

For many people, a natural calamity provides their first personal experience with the realities of creaturehood’s connection with the planet. [...]

[...] At the same time such experiences themselves provide contact with the deepest energies of your being — even when they are being used “destructively.”

[...] The pool of emotional energy into which your emotions flow is still composed of unalike charges, but generally speaking, the individual contribution of all those participating will fall into a coherent pattern that gives impetus and direction to the storm, providing the charge and the power behind it.

These organizations then serve as awakeners or stimulation to inner portions of the self, always providing it with fresh experience. [...]

[...] Left alone, it will flow through thoughts and images that provide their own therapy.

The dream state provides you with a trial framework in which you explore probable actions and decide upon the ones you want to physically materialize. [...]

Ruburt found great comfort in the church as a young person, for if it created within its members the image of a Sinful Self, it also of course provided a steady system of treatment—a series of rituals that gave the individual some sense of hope the Sinful Self could be redeemed, as in most of Christianity’s framework through adherence to certain segments of Christian dogma. [...]

[...] Ruburt’s creativity broke through those frameworks to provide our sessions and to release the psychic abilities that had earlier been nearly but not completely repressed. [...]

(Long pause.) Ruburt broke through both psychically and creatively—that is, the sessions almost immediately provided him with new creative inspiration and expression and with the expansions needed psychologically that would help fulfill his promise as a writer and as a mature personality. [...]

You work with material that is already there, provided. [...] The entire physical universe emerges from an inside, however, and none of your manufacture would provide you with even one object, were it not for those that appeared as source materials long before. [...]

[...] Your own behavior, customs, sciences, arts, and disciplines are in a way uniquely yours, yet they also provide glimpses into the ways in which various groupings of abilities can be used to probe into the “unknown” reality.

[...] First of all, however, this book will open up many very important areas, and provide guidelines for many others to follow.

[...] They mix and merge with the thoughts of others, to form man’s livingscape, providing the vast mental elements from which physical events will be formed.

[...] You will begin to discover that [those spontaneous urges] are as basically good and life-giving as the physical elements of the earth, that provide the impetus for all biological life.

[...] In those terms, there are inner neurological-like systems that provide constant communication through all of the world’s parts. [...]
