There are leaps, however, in your terms for you to take, and in those terms time is involved. The sessions are as timeless as you know yourselves to be. You have taken a style of existence. You have accepted certain impediments of a normal nature, Ruburt’s health difficulties, your problems with chores versus work, or hassles with Prentice—because you believe that in some strange fashion these connect you with others of your kind, and with physical existence itself.

You each believe that shortcomings themselves are reassuring. You have not gone so far from the norm after all (amused)—you are as human as anyone else. Far be it from you to put others to shame, or hurt their feelings, either of you. Each of you therefore maintain your “hassles” stubbornly, so that you can say to others “We have our problems—it is very difficult for us.”

(Before the session I burdened Jane again with my hassles about my side and groin. [...]

[...] I’d thought I had fairly well put the problem of taxes in its place after a number of hassles over them in recent years; that is, I thought I’d learned something there.... [...]

(I’d asked Jane today if Seth could discuss briefly two subjects in the session this evening: My recent hassles with the discomfort in my side and groin, and Jane’s right hand. [...]

(She remembered Seth talking about my own hassles, and the dreams. [...]

[...] Afternoon—all that hassle about the nutty bunch in New York call Tam—going to send him Bed. [...]

(All during this time, October–November, we’ve also been involved in a series of hassles with the foreign publishers Ankh-Hermes and Ariston. [...] As I’ve said to Jane more than once, “I wonder what we ought to know that Tam hasn’t told us”—meaning of course that every time a hassle develops with Prentice-Hall we find out a new batch of information that Tam has known all along but never relayed to us. Both of you—to some extent, now, following this evening’s discussion —felt that with two books and perhaps even the poetry book coming out in one year, people would think it was easy enough for you to write your pronouncements from the hilltop, even though in those books you made certain that you mentioned any and all difficulties that came your way, collected your stories of hassles with scientists or publishers, and so forth. [...]

[...] It seems that in recent years one of my main goals in life has been to pare down—or eliminate outright—a number of ideas and obligations and hassles that I’d finally realized weren’t worth the time to retain. [...]
