(Last night, April 10, 1964, just before I fell asleep, I had the following experience: My eyes were closed but I saw a sheet of paper filled with script that I recognized to be the handwriting of Dee Masters, my supervisor at the Arnot Art Gallery where I work in the afternoons.

(It was a piece of notepaper, not typewriter size but smaller. I made out my husband’s name, Rob, and a few other words which I have since forgotten. The piece of paper was bright, as though there was light somewhere, but everything else was dark as it usually is when you have your eyes closed. I have the feeling that another such experience happened right after this one, but I fell asleep and do not remember. I had forgotten the incident completely until this afternoon, April 11, 1964.)

(I fell asleep within seconds after this inner experience. [...]

(I do remember that I briefly wondered, as I fell asleep, if the experience reflected a quite natural concern over the moon-landing’s potential hazards.

(“Then I thought: I didn’t want to give real book sessions while I was asleep — who would take them down? Unless Rob could while he was asleep too. [...]

(While she was waking up, Jane asked me several times if she had really been asleep. [...]

[...] Had difficulty falling asleep, wasn’t sleepy and at 11 decided to forget about it. [...]

[...] Then she fell asleep. Later, when she was getting supper, she realized suddenly that she’d had an experience after all, that “something had happened while I was asleep, and I was delighted with it while I was asleep.” [...]

(At about 8 PM this evening Jane fell asleep with a lighted cigarette in her hand as she sat leaning back on the couch. She’d told me a few minutes earlier that she wanted to have a session on herself tonight, and when I came out into the living room with my notebook I found her asleep for the second or third time since supper. [...]

(Now, in the midst of another long pause, her eyes closed, Jane began snoring: She was asleep—briefly. [...]

(Yet even after this little confrontation, I found her asleep again when I returned from the bedroom with her office chair—the one I use now to take notes for sessions. [...]

[...] First, after just half asleep I suddenly knew how to turn over in a particular easy way that didn’t hurt nearly as much as usual. [...]

[...] Popular demonstrations lead the public to believe that the subject must fall asleep or be completely relaxed, yet this is not the case. [...]

(Pause.) On the other hand, such beliefs can be accepted when it appears that the conscious mind is asleep, or dulled as in periods of shock, or during operations. [...]

(Jim H. told of finding a man asleep at his work. [...]
